MY 2015 PARENTING DECISION
[Our child our well being]
By Tolulope Hepsiba
Parenting: - the process of taking care of children until they are old enough to take care of themselves.
.
Over the past years I have started to feel that I have been protecting my child from the outside world a bit too much. Agreed that the world today is turning unpredictable day by day. But how far are we going to protect our children? One day they have to step out of the warm comfort and “look at this world more confused and not know what to do; also we cannot accompany them everywhere.
In the word of a respected child psychologist “You must prepare your child to function well when you are not around; She should take decisions, perform activities and desist from sin WITHOUT you watching” That is the true test of your parenting; this really struck a chord and I have set on the path to excel as a parent.
Self-reliant:- confident in your own abilities and able to do things for yourself: not needing help from other people
Make them more self-reliant:- Children need to be given some space to try out things themselves, recognize their own taste, and try out new ideas. They must be encouraged to make up their own minds instead of being spoon fed. Small choices like what to eat, what to wear etc will act as a stepping stone to bigger ones.
Researchers have shown that children prefer a soft parent that makes things available to them pronto; this situation has to change! The first lesson is to take care of your own self. So “no more fetching and carrying by mummy dearest.”
Gratitude: - the quality or feeling of being grateful or thankful
Instill in them the act of Gratitude: - Irrespective of the nature of the gifts, whether it is an expensive gift or something that is not as extravagant, teach them to always remember that it is the thought that counts Even a simple HUG is a valuable gift! Also encourage your children to hand-write a thank you note to relations; family friends; neighbors etc for their presents. Honestly I am a believer of hand written notes, as it takes more thought and care when you have to write it out with paper and pen.
The value of gratitude is a precious value, and a legacy that we can instill in our children. It is more than saying thank you; it is an attitude of appreciation, an attitude that can help to bring out the feeling of peace, joy, abundance and the beauty of human nature.
Communication: - an exchange of information
Communication: - Spend Quality Time and Teach Them Everything You Can.
In order to teach your children, you must spend as much time with them as possible. So when you get home from work and are tired, don't just relax since this is the only time that you could spend with your child during the weekdays. Instead, use this spare time to find out how their day went, what they've learned in school and you could also tell them how your day went and what you've learned.
I also highly recommend that you use this time to teach them important life skills, such as reading, writing, math, self-esteem, confidence etc. You can turn it into a game and more importantly, make it fun since every child wants to play and have a good time.
Weekends are no different. If anything, you should spend more time with them on the weekend because most people are not working during this time..
Remember, the thing that kids want most from their parents is their time!!!
